ATEX stands for ATmospheric EXplosible and relates to hazards of explosive atmospheres in the workplace. These explosive atmospheres occur when flammable gases or combustible dust are mixed in the air.

There should be minimum safety requirements for equipment used in these high-risk environments. When it comes to lighting, ATEX explosion-proof lights are required. These LED lights can be categorised into zone 1 or zone 2 depending on the level of threat of explosion.

Zone 1 vs Zone 2 Classification

When choosing your ATEX LED lights for your area, you must consider whether they meet the criteria for zone 1 or 2.

Zone 1

Zone 1 refers to an explosive atmosphere consisting of air with flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist. This mixture is likely to occur in normal operation from time to time.

Zone 2

Zone 2 refers to an explosive atmosphere consisting of air with flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist. This mixture is not likely to occur in normal operation. If it does occur, it only persists for a short period.

Features of INUI’s ATEX LEDs

As specialists in the industry, we have designed ATEX lights that are the best on the market. The aluminium used in the explosion-proof high bays is manufactured to anti-corrosion level WF2, and all lights are fitted with the Bridgelux LED chip.

All of the ATEX units come with a compression gland for cable retention only. The actual cable gland for the fitting purchased is down to the customer so that it matches up to the cable you are using.

Benefits of ATEX LED Lights

ATEX LED lights are essential in any hazardous environment, as you benefit from:

  • Increased safety - ATEX LEDs have a thermal energy lower than the energy required to start an explosion. The ATEX lights stay cool and prevent sparks to ensure that the light doesn’t become an ignition source, so prevents the risk of explosion. Flameproof LEDs are given the code Ex d and are designed to contain fires in the enclosure rather than prevent them - EX d LEDs are best suited to zone 1 areas.
  • Save energy - LEDs consume much less energy than traditional bulbs whilst providing a high-lumen output.
  • Environmentally friendly - ATEX LEDs have a low impact on the environment as they don’t contain harmful substances like mercury.
  • Long lifespan - With a lifespan of 50,000 hours, ATEX LEDs don’t have to be replaced very often and require low maintenance. This is particularly useful for hazardous environments as it can be dangerous and costly to change and maintain the lights - sites can even be shut down to allow for maintenance.

  • Applications of ATEX LED Lights

Our tried and tested ATEX LED lights are designed for use in hazardous environments such as:

    • Mines
    • Quarries
    • ATEX Zone 1 & Zone 2
    • EX II explosion areas
